Starring Matthew Broderick
Set entirely in a squalid house in Dublin on Christmas Eve, Connor McPherson's The Seafarer is a morality play with a metaphysical twist. Tony winner Matthew Broderick (The Producers, It's Only a Play) plays Lockhart, a mysterious stranger who turns up at a ramshackle game of poker between old friends, and raises the stakes to the highest possible level. Striking a fine balance between melancholic naturalism and magical realism, The Seafarer is a fine showcase for the playwright, whose most recent work was the Bob Dylan influenced play The Girl from the North Country.
Originally premiering in 2006 at London's Royal National Theatre, The Seafarer played Broadway a year later, with Ciaran Hinds in the lead role. This Irish Rep Off-Broadway production is directed by Ciaran O'Reilly, and also stars Colin McPhillamy, Michael Mellamphy, Andy Murray, and Tim Ruddy.
