The Story Of Saint Joan

Joan; Daughter, farm girl, visionary, martyr... woman. Set in 15th century France - Joan of Arc, a peasant girl, started hearing "voices" which she believed were the voices of Saint Catherine, Saint Margaret, and Saint Michael. Joan stated the voices command her to aid the Dauphin, Charles, in his fight against England and Burgundy and to see him crown as King of France. As successful as she was, she was ultimately betrayed and condemned as a witch, her reward was to be burned at the stake.

Did You Know?

Joan was only 19 when she was on trial, her charge was cross-dressing. Although she agreed to wearing "the correct attire" when she stood for her claims, she would often wear male (military) clothing, especially in prison as it allowed her to fasten her hosen, boots and tunic together which protected her from sexual assault. The court allowed the "cross-dressing" in order to protect herself, however they stated when there was no threat of assault around she should have worn a dress (which was the correct attire for a women). As a Catholic, this was enough to sentence her to death under the Biblical Clothing Law. In 1431 she was burnt at the stake, and then burned twice more in order to prevent relic collection.
