Why See New York Philharmonic - Van Zweden Conducts Mahler and Glass?
Jaap van Zweden'S inaugural concert
The New York Phil's 2017/18 season gets underway with a stirring double bill that features music by Mahler and Philip Glass. Conducted by the new Musical Director Designate Jaap van Zweden, after the departure of Alan Gilbert, his first concert also welcomes sibling pianist virtuosos Katia and Marielle Labeque, whose most famous work is their renowed album Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which was one of the first classical albums to reach gold status. They will be putting their prodigious talents to work on Glass' Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.
Mahler's Fifth Symphony is one of the composer's most expressive, passionate and lyrical, inspired by his near-death experience, and finding love with fellow composer and famed beauty Alma Schindler.
Performance date: 22 September 2017
