Bychkov Conducts Strauss' Alpine Symphony
Whilst his previous eight tone poems contributed to his status as one of the most celebrated and controversial composers of his time, Strauss' ninth tone poem An Alpine Symphony solidified his place amongst the legends. Comprised of a staggering the 50-minute orchestral epic requires 125 instrumentalists, including wind and thunder machines, bird calls and cow bells, to evoke the sonic portrait of a man conquering a mountain. Don't miss the truly epic work, presented by the New York Philharmonic and world-renowned conductor Semyon Bychkov.
Following the unidentified climber through the thickets of the woods, past a waterfall and across pastures before he reaches the glacial summit of the mountain, the soul-stirring symphony's 22 parts fuse Strauss skill at aurally describing the poetry of nature. The evening's program also includes Luciano Berio's Sinfonia, an innovative post-serial classical NY Phil commission featuring Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth.
