3 Iconic Performers Headline The NJSO Winter Festival

Describing it as the highlight of her career thus far, recent resident Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Xian Zhang welcomes three renowned musical guests for the ensembles 2019 Winter Festival Programming. Taking place over three weekends, Zhang will conduct Grammy-winning virtuoso Emanuel Ax, powerhouse pianist Daniil Trifonov and sonorous Soprano Dawn Upshaw in three distinct programs that are tied together by festival theme of Music Speaks, i.e. music inspired by great poetry, storytelling and mythology.

January 18th - 20th, 2019
Upshaw brings her vocal radiance to what is sure to be an arresting premiere of Maria Schnieder's Winter Morning Walks, a deeply moving and ultimately uplifting song cycle about a poet's recovery from a life-threatening illness. This is followed by Mahler's soaring Symphony No. 4, ending the evening with a sonic sense of unbridled joy and lust for life.

January 25th - 27th, 2019
Daniil Trifonov brings his dynamic key touch and lyrical passion to Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra, a dazzling tone poem that is a favoured showpiece of many a virtuoso soloist, as well as Schumann's effervescent Piano Concerto and the NJSO premiere of Scriabin's colorful Poem of Ecstasy.
