A New Revival of Stanley Houghton's Hindle Wakes

Written in 1910 by English dramatist Stanley Houghton and first performed in 1912, Hindle Wakes was critically lauded at the time as a timely and significant mediation on ethics, morals, classism and sexism. Now, more relevant than ever, the poignant play enjoys an Off-Broadway revival at Theatre Row's Clurman Theatre.

The story takes place during 'wakes week' in a town called Hindle. This means the mill is closed and its idle workers turn their attentions elsewhere. Alan Jeffcote, the mill owners first born son, finds diversion in the the arms of Fanny Hawthorn. When their parents find out, it is agreed that the young lovers must marry to avoid scandal, never mind the fact Alan is already engaged...
