Maria Farantouri Performs The Works of Mikis Theodorakis
Lovingly referred to as Greece's answer to Joan Baez, Maria Farantouri has spent her career not only performing the folk music of her homeland but by being a vocal social and political activist. When Farantouri was exiled by the right-wing military coup in the late 60s and early 70s, the iconic singer started a four decade collaboration with legendary Greek songwriter and composer Mikis Theodorakis, writing the first of many protest songs.
The foremost interpreter of Theodorakis' musical legacy, Farantouri performs a special one-night-only evening of his best loved works at NYC's historic Carnegie Hall, May 5th 2017. Accompanied by a chamber orchestra and the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Choir, the songstress will evoke his storied career which includes the film scores of Zorba the Greek, Z and Serpico as well as vibrant symphonic works, cantatas, hymns and ballets infused with the beauty of Grecian traditional music.
