The world is crude and grotesque. How do you make some of the mess we are is at the root of this play. I thought it was screamingly funny, though filled and hopeful.
Folks not willing to look into WHY the blood, gore and farts are there will not get it. There is a reason to the madness. An important reason.
And I will restate, it's screamingly funny.
I am seeing a few early bad reviews from viewers who saw previews, keep in mind the show opened to previews six days after the female lead stepped away for medical reasons.

HILLARIOUS, BLOODY HILARIOUS !
People go to plays having no idea what they’re going to see. It’s a mistake. I loved this play. The acting is superb - a case study in comedy - the directing is brilliant the set is brilliant. It’s a thoughtful play which on its way to making its point happens to be uproariously funny to a majority of the audience. No one who’s written here for whom it wasn’t their cup of tea, can deny they weren't surrounded by people laughing their butts off throughout of the play. Happened to me on the two lucky occasions I had to see the Gary in preview. Bloody Hilarious. Don’t miss it if you think you’ll like it. It’s brilliant.

MR. LANE DOES NOT MISS A BEAT!
Nathan Lane is the master of masters
A turn of his head, an eyeball role, or just walking across the stage is just plain funny.
In my book, this talented & artful man, can make you laugh regardless of your state of mind.
Nathan Lane is & will always be my hero.
He can bring ANY SHOW to life “no pun intended.”

FUN AND IRREVERENT
This play is not for everyone. As other reviewers have noted there are a lot of penises and poop/fart jokes. However the context: when the mighty fall they are just filled with gas and poo like everyone else and it is always the ones on the bottom left to clean up the mess, is completely relevant in today’s world. The language can be difficult at times, but the acting was outstanding and the play was often laugh out loud funny. No, i didnt understand every single line or concept, but it is a unique and singular experience regardless. I don’t see this having a long run because of a lack of universal appeal, and because I cannot imagine who but Nathan Lane could pull this off so, if you do choose to go, enter with an open mind and enjoy the ride.

REQUIRED AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
This play requires work from the audience, something most audiences do not do anymore. So, knowing something about Taylor Mac and his beliefs/philosophy makes this play better appreciated. That said, it is a production for a limited audience, therefore limiting its run. Was glad i went.

SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR ANOTHER SHOW
At first I thought I just "didn't get it." But I think I did get it and it just wasn't very good. There's a few places that have some funny lines but overall it's just not very good. I wish I would have gone to see another play. Any play.
Premise is the war is over and the maid and village clown (step up from village idiot) are cleaning up the bodies at the castle and discussing their lives and what they would do if in charge of the county. Seemingly this could be a really interesting play. But it's not. There's only so many penis/poop/fart jokes about a village fool that can occur. The mad woman in the play who pops in now and again - I'm not really sure what her role/point is.
I visited for one week and saw Be More Chill, Sampson and Delilah and this. Wish I had spent my money on something other than this.

HARD TO REMEMBER
Some people laughed, even guffawed, but my husband and I didn't find it funny at all. It was confusing and boring. Read a summary of the story ahead of time. That will help, but I would just skip the show.
