Penned in 1892 and first performed in New York at the height of a mass Jewish migration from Europe to the Americas, The Yiddish King Lear, written by what many call The Yiddish's answer to Shakespeare, was hailed as an inauguration of a great era of serious drama in the Jewish literary culture. Now Jacob Gordin's seminal work enjoys a staged reading at NY's Angel Orensanz Foundation, running for two nights only.
While not a literal translation of the Bard's text, the Yiddish King Lear modernises the story in which a Jewish merchant, not a King, divides his wealth between his three daughters. As he bequeaths his empire, he is warned by his youngest daughter of the fate of King Lear, a fate that seemingly awaits him too...
