Starring 2017 tony nominee Danny devito!
Oscar, Emmy and Tony nominee Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight, The Avengers) returns to Broadway in Arthur Miller's examination of family values, where he will be joined by Danny DeVito, Tony Shalhoub and Jessica Hecht! As with many of Miller's plays, the title is a play on the key themes of the story; the tangible price of the furniture to be sold off, and the price caused by somebody's decision. This Roundabout Theatre Company production will be helmed by Terry Kinney, the co-founder of the Steppenwolf in Chicago.
Exploring family dynamics
Following the death of the family patriarch, Victor Franz (Mark Ruffalo) and his brother Walter return home to divide up the family assets; joining them are Esther, Victor's (Shalhoub) wife (Hecht), an alcoholic, and a seedy furniture dealer (DeVito) who is determined to get the best price for his work, no matter the cost to anybody else. Thanks to the Depression, Victor made huge concessions in order to care for his father, whilst his brother Walter left to become a successful doctor; however seeing everybody else paw over his parents' possessions bring out long-buried conflict within himself and forces him to question the value of his sacrifice.
A timeless play
Premiering off-Broadway in 1968, Miller's play was nominated for two Tony Awards; for Best Play and Best Scenic Design, both awards going to Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. The Price was last seen on Broadway in 1999, directed by James Naughton.
