What Did The Critics Think of The Inheritance on Broadway?

Now playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theater

After wowing critics and audiences alike in London, and winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play, last year Matthew Lopez's epic drama, The Inheritance, has landed on Broadway! But, what did the critics think?

The Hollywood Reporter praised the almost seven-hour drama with, "The play is both wonderfully funny, and exquisitely poignant, but its real achievement is the deft hand with which it connects multiple generations of gay men, underscoring the importance of sharing stories and keeping the past alive."

Variety mirrored the sentiment saying, "The play is a remarkable slice of life in a time of war and a beautiful remembrance". Time Out New York said that The Inheritance is "a searching, expansive and sometimes very moving exploration of love, money, community and memory."

The Los Angeles Times said, "'The Inheritance' brings gay men into the spotlight in an era in which they're not facing the same level of crisis of a generation ago but still fighting for that dignity Walter Poole was determined to provide his dying friends. Lopez may not have Checkhov's ability to give us laughter through tears, but the laughter and tears he separately provides are humanizing Broadway this all season."

What is The Inheritance about?

It was 1983 when the specter of AIDS reared its head in New York's flourishing gay scene, causing worldwide panic and mistrust towards gay men. Now a whole generation has passed after the countless deaths caused by the cruel disease; Lopez's poignant and profound drama examines the legacy of gay men today in New York, where reminders of the epidemic are still all-too-real. We're introduced to a cast of characters whose lives, love and hopes intwine as Lopez pitches us between past and present, illustrating the gay experience of the last 40 years with deft detail, wit, and passion.

The Inheritance is now playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theater through to March 1, 2020.
