Tootsie Announces Closing Date

The Tony-nominated musical plays at the Marquis Theater.

Tootsie, the Tony-winning musical adaptation of the '80s movie of the same name, has announced that it will be taking its final bow on Broadway on January 5, 2020 after 25 previews and 293 regular performances.

Santino Fontana, who stars as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels, garnered the 2019 Tony award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical with Robert Horn winning a Tony for Best Book of a Musical.

Tootsie opened to rave reviews at the Marquis Theater theater on April 23 with Rolling Stone saying, "The laugh-out-loud funniest musical of the Broadway season. Yes it's another tune-filled spin on a hit movie...but this one is actually good". Our own Broadway reviewer praised the musical saying, "This is a classic musical comedy with laugh-a-minute dialogue, you can't go wrong." Read Nicola's Full Review here.

Alongside Fontana Tootsie also stars Lilli Cooper as Julie Nichols, Sandy Stiles as Sandy Lester, John Behlmann as Max Van Horn, Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff Slater, Julie Halston as Rita Marshall, Michael McGrath as Stan Fields and Reg Rogers as Ron Carlisle.

Directed by Scott Ellis Tootsie features Music and lyrics by David Yazbek, choreography by Denis Jones,
Set by David Rockwell and Costumes by William Ivey Long.

What is Tootsie about?

When obsessive perfectionist Michael is fired from a Broadway gig due to his proclivities, he decides that change is necessary - even if it means his gender. Taking to drag to pass himself off as the glamorous 'Dorothy', he soon lands a new job. But watch out Broadway, makeup and clothes are no match for this ego!

Tootsie is now playing at the Marquis Theater through to January 5, 2020.
