After a critically acclaimed run in Chicago Tootsie has finally arrived on Broadway! With Tony winner Santino Fontana leading the cast what did the critics think of Broadway's latest musical?
Rolling Stone was full of praise for the production saying "The laugh-out-loud funniest musical of the Broadway season. Yes it's another tune-filled spin on a hit movie...but this one is actually good" continuing with "Musical - comedy heaven."
Variety continued with the praise saying "The new Broadway adaptation of 'Tootsie' is old-fashioned and proud of it - and it's a surefire crowd-pleaser", they continued with "Horn sprinkles the show's book with clever one-liners...Well-cast character actors demonstrate their bankable skills...each of the songs in the stage musical can make you choke with laughter."
The New York Times championed leading star Santino Fontana saying "Fontana get just about everything right" with Time Out saying that Tootsie is "the performance of his [Fontana] career to date".
Dubbed as a "delight" by Deadline and "a marvel" by the Los Angeles Times it looks like Tootsie is Broadway's latest smash hit!
What is Tootsie about?
When obsessive perfectionist Michael is fired from a Broadway gig due to his proclivities, he decides that change is necessary - even if it means his gender. Taking to drag to pass himself off as the glamorous 'Dorothy', he soon lands a new job. But watch out Broadway, makeup and clothes are no match for this ego!
