Mother Of The Maid Is A Resounding Success

Now playing at the Public Theater

Theatrical titan Glenn Close stars in the Public Theater's production of Mother Of The Maid. Opening last night at the Public's Anspacher Theater, the production tells the story of the woman who raised Joan of Arc, but what did the critics think?

The New York Times praised Close's performance saying, 'Close's performance...is a triumphant blend of sharp sense and passionate sensibility, of an old pro’s expertise and a newcomer's enthusiasm'. Time Out mirrored this sentiment saying, 'Anderson's new play shifts the focus from Joan herself to Isabelle, the woman who raised her. Played by the always astonishing Close'.

Deadline said that 'After all the stylized wisecracking and winking, Anderson's tale hits, when it hits, hard. The playwright gives us the terror, not just the idealism'. Vulture said that 'The tone is light and full of discovery. It's a comedy until it's not'.

What is Mother Of The Maid about?

Born in North Eastern France in 1377, Isabelle was said to be a modest woman who instilled religion and the value of hard work into all her children. After Joan rose to prominence and was convicted of heresy, she put all of her efforts into clearing her daughter's name, including an impassioned performance at seventy years old before the Holy See that led to Joan's pardon in 1456. Imbued with massive strength and determination to see justice righted, Isabelle's efforts are likely one of the reasons that her daughter's legacy survives to this day.

Mother Of The Maid is now playing at the Public Theater through to December 23.
