From humble beginnings to right hand man of the King, Wolf Hall is the story of Thomas Cromwell. History has not been very kind to him; his cunning and fixing has cast him as a Machiavellian character, pulling the strings of the Tudor administration to ensure his own survival. This first part of the story sees the rise of Cromwell from his humble beginnings from a working-class family to becoming the right-hand man of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who was adviser to King Henry VIII. Managing to sidestep Wolsley's fall from grace, he eventually takes his place as the most powerful of Henry's ministers, making some dangerous courtly enemies in the process.

The second part of Mike Poulton's two plays in rep, the story of Thomas Cromwell picks up where we left off in Part 1, as he reaches the apex of power at Henry VIII's right hand. Cromwell's scheming has worked and Anne Boleyn is now the new Queen. But by splitting from the Catholic church, England is now unprotected and isolated in Europe. With no male heir forthcoming, the King's affections are wandering elsewhere. How can the ambitious manipulator keep his position in a newly precarious court, where suspicion reigns more than ever?
