A New Musical From the Composer of Chicago
Following their collaboration on Vineyard Theatre's The Landing, famed composer John Kander (Cabaret, Chicago) and playwright Greg Pierce (Her Requiem) return to the Off-Broadway theatre with their latest work Kid Victory. A complex work, alternately humorous and haunting, this musical centers on the character of Luke, a teenage boy who went missing for a year, and is struggling to readjust to to the normality of everyday life. The man responsible Cabaret's ghoulish, dreamlike musical numbers, Kander is an expert at handling troubling subject matter with a light touch, and threading together horror and effervescent sparkle.
Leading the cast of this New York premiere is Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba (Chicago, Contact), while Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed) directs.
What is Kid Victory About?
Teenager Luke has returned home to his small Kansas hometown, but he's a very different person than when he left. A year ago, he was abducted by a man he met on the internet. His parents are overjoyed to have him back, yet are at a loss at how to reconnect to their wounded son, who spends most of the time locked away in his room. The one person he does seem comfortable talking to is Emily, the woman who runs the gardening shop where Luke is employed. Slowly he begins to open up to her, about both the horrifying ordeal he's been through, and the person that he wants to become.
