The jazz ensemble is joined by the 11 year old pianist prodigy
One of the most important figures in the history of jazz, Thelonious Monk is also one of the hardest to play, his stunningly inventive works full of unusual rhythms, time signatures and leaps of imagination. If there's any orchestra in the world who are up to the task though it's this one. Over the course of two nights, this world-renowned ensemble will tackle Monk's oeuvre, which they've rearranged for Big Band, with the help of 11-year old pianist prodigy Joey Alexander.
The Orchestra's current band leader (and artistic director) is the great Wynton Marsalis, famed trumpeter and composer, whose voice became instantly recognisable to millions through his Making the Music series on NPR. Born in New Orleans in 1961, Marsalis is the winner of nine Grammys and has played with everyone from Herbie Hancock to Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughn.
