As messy divorces go, this one's pretty hard to top. Warren Adler's original 1981 novel documents the separation of Jonathan and Barbara Rose, an embittered and increasingly outrageous legal struggle which pits the once happily married couple against each other in a fierce territorial battle. The story was later adapted for a film version starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, and now it's headed for Broadway.
With a script by original writer Adler, this production looks set to be one of the season's most blackly comic and twisted stage offerings. In a statement, Adler writes that he is looking forward to bringing his "cautionary tale to an ever widening audience". Alongside War of the Roses, Adler has penned over 30 novels, including Trans-Siberian Express and Random Hearts.
The cast and creative teams are yet to be announced.
Jonathan and Barbara Rose are happily married, living out a comfortable existence in Washington suburbia with their two children. From the outside, it seems like the perfect marriage. But, when Jonathan suffers a minor heart attack, Barbara arrives at a startling conclusion - she doesn't love him anymore. This epiphany sets in motion the messiest and most brutal divorce proceedings imaginable, as both Roses battle it out for their estate, the kids and the pets.
