Mr Butterworth is good at confronting his urban audiences with vistas of nature. Away from concrete, man reverts to something more feral.

Hugh Jackman stars in this new production of Jez Butterworth's acclaimed play. The Man, our nameless and rugged central character, has whisked his new lover away to a remote woodland cabin where he wants to go trout fishing in the darkness of the new moon.
The woman, however, is unsure about this idea. When he returns alone and a second woman appears, it is the audience unsure - unsure about who the woman is, where she has gone, and how she fits into The Man's disturbing relationships with those he invites to his cabin.
Jez Butterworth's previous play, Jerusalem, opened on Broadway in 2011 where it was nominated for a Tony award. Like Jerusalem, The River is written in Butterworth's very poetic and often quite searching style, and presents man's wild nature alongside the wildness of nature itself.
The River's world premiere was in London in 2012 at the Royal Court Theatre, and this Broadway production will be directed by the director of the play's premiere, Ian Rickson.
