Making a welcome return to Broadway in spring 2018, Mark Medoff's 1980 Tony Award-winning drama also spawned an Oscar-winning movie in 1986. Transferring from Boston's Eventime Theater, which is due to stage its production this summer, the drama will also feature a deaf actor in the role of Sarah. The production will be helmed by the Tony winning director Kenny Leon, who in 2014 led A Raising In The Sun.
Following the story of a clandestine relationship between a deaf former student of a teacher of deaf pupils, Medoff's groundbreaking drama uses both the spoken word and sign language, making this a truly inclusive production. Originally written for the deaf actress Phyllis Frelich, it was based in some part on her relationship with her husband, Robert Steinberg. As well as finding success in New York, it also traveled to the West End in London, winning three Olivier Awards in addition to its three Tonys.
The drama also borne a feature film in 1986, directed by by Randa Haines and written by Hesper Anderson as well as input by Medoff. Carrying on the success of the original play, it garnered five Academy Award nominations, with a win for Marlee Matlin in the Best Actress category. It also co-starred William Hurt as the teacher whom she falls in love with. To buy tickets for the 2017 Boston production, please click here.
