Winner of Three Tony Awards

Mark Medoff's Children of a Lesser God will receive its first ever Broadway revival in the 2015/16 season. Telling the story of a deaf woman Sarah and her turbulent relationship with her teacher, the play's original run at The Longacre Theatre in 1980 garnered three Tony Awards; one for Best Play and two for its lead actors Phyllis Frelich and John Rubinstein.

This new production will be helmed by one of Broadway's most in demand directors, Kenny Leon. He scored a recent success with the Denzel Washington starring A Raisin' in the Sun, for which he was awarded the Tony for Best Director. Casting is yet to be announced, but the leading male role of the teacher is sure to have some famous names in contention for the part. As for the role of Sarah, producer Hal Luftig (Kinky Boots) has confirmed it will be played by a deaf actress.

What is Children of a Lesser God About?

Sarah Norman is a deaf woman, working at a school for the deaf and hard of hearing in New England. A solitary, isolated figure, she refuses to speak or lip-read, preferring to exclusively sign. A new teacher, James, arrives at the school, and the two begin to form a romance. But cracks appear in the relationship as James persists in trying to make Sarah speak.

Did You Know?

Marlee Matlin won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Sarah in the 1986 movie adaptation. Winning at the age of 21, she remains the youngest ever recipient of the award.
