BWW Flashback: BULLETS OVER BROADWAY Closes on the Great White Way

The world premiere production of the new musical comedy BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, written by Woody Allen, and based on the screenplay by Allen and Douglas McGrath for the 1994 film, and directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, will play its final performance on Broadway today, August 24 at the St. James Theatre. As of that date, the musical will have played 156 regular performances and 33 preview performances. Below, BroadwayWorld takes you back through the show's run on the Great White Way!

BULLETS OVER BROADWAY stars Brooks Ashmanskas (The Producers) as "Warner Purcell," Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee Zach Braff ("Scrubs," Garden State) as "David Shayne," Tony Award nominee Nick Cordero (Rock of Ages) as "Cheech," Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie (Passion; Ragtime; Kiss Me, Kate) as "Helen Sinclair," Vincent Pastore ("The Sopranos") as "Nick Valenti," Betsy Wolfe (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) as "Ellen," Lenny Wolpe (The Drowsy Chaperone) as "Julian Marx,"Heléne Yorke (Grease) as "Olive Neal" and Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba (Contact) as "Eden Brent."

The show also features Clyde Alves, Jim Borstelmann, Preston Truman Boyd, Janet Dickinson, Bryn Dowling, Kim Fauré, Casey Garvin, Kelcy Griffin,Dan Horn, Sarah Lin Johnson, Andy Jones, Amanda Kloots-Larsen, Kevin Ligon, Synthia Link, Brittany Marcin, James Moye, Beth Johnson Nicely, Eric Santagata, Jonalyn Saxerand Kevin Worley.

BULLETS OVER BROADWAY features a design team of Broadway veterans including Santo Loquasto (scenic design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design), Paul Huntley (wig and hair design), William Berloni (animal training), Glen Kelly (music supervision and adaptation / additional Lyrics), Doug Besterman (orchestrations) and Andy Einhorn (music direction/conductor and vocal arrangements). The Broadway production of BULLETS OVER BROADWAY features existing music of the period.

The musical tells the story of an aspiring young playwright (Braff) newly arrived on Broadway in 1920's New York who is forced to cast a mobster's (Pastore) talentless girlfriend (Yorke) in his latest drama in order to get it produced.

The new musical officially opened on April 10, 2014, and BroadwayWorld was there to catch all the action, including openin night bows (photos by Walter McBride), interviews with the cast and creative team after the show, a surprise cast party performance and more!

In preparation for the 2014 Tony Awards ceremony this June, BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge was thrilled to speak with nearly all of the Tony nominees, including Nick Cordero, nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. BULLETS OVER BROADWAY was also nominated for Best Book of a Musical (Woody Allen), Best Choreography (Susan Stroman), Best Orchestrations (Doug Besterman), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Santo Loquasto), and Best Costume Design of a Musical (William Ivey Long, who ended up winning the 2014 Drama Desk Award in the same category).

Even if the musical only got to "run wild" for a few months on Broadway, we hope this isn't Woody Allen's last project onstage! Adieu, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY! Here's to a memorable last performance!
