Starring Linda Lavin
Twenty one-time Tony Award winner Hal Prince returns to New York City Opera to helm Candide. This celebrated 'opera house version' (as opposed to the one often revived on Broadway) of Bernstein's comic masterpiece was first debuted by New York City Opera in 1982, under the direction of Prince, and has since become one of the company's staples. This 2017 production boasts a very special guest star, with Tony winner Linda Lavin (Alice, Broadway Bound) starring in the role of the Old Lady.
A continent-spanning romp, Candide follows the fortunes of its eponymous protagonist, who is banished from his land by a baron, only to become caught up in a plot to overthrow the very same baron by an invading army. Full of soaring arias and the rightly celebrated Overture, which has become one of Bernstein's signature pieces, Candide is a treat for opera and Broadway fans alike.
