An exploration of social and racial injustice through dance
The Brooklyn-born form of dancing known as flexing takes centrestage at Park Armory Avenue this March and April. Flexing came to prominence in the early nineties, and combines elements of tutting and Jamacian 'bruk-up', with seemingly unnatural twisting of joints and the striking of bizarre geometric patterns.
Flexn utilises the dance style in a meditation on social injustice and inequality, with particular focus on the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. It marks a collaboration between innovative theatre director Peter Sellars (Public Theater's Othello) and Flexn choreographer Reggie "Regg Roc" Gray, who have worked together with a group of 21 dancers to create the show's routines.
