A real Broadway theater, just for kids, this cozy and intimate, 499 seat, beautifully restored landmark has a Fall to Spring production schedule, offering the best in children's theater. There's not a bad seat in the house. The tiers are skillfully raised so that even small children should be able to see the stage easily. If there is a hulking grownup directly in front, though, the New Victory has lovely wine-red velvet booster seats. The ushers are enthusiastic, happy, and friendly, and will bring one instantly if asked. The concession stand and bathrooms (with a decent number of stalls, very clean) are downstairs, and there's a TV set up with a video view of the stage if you haven't finished snacking before intermission ends. There are even pitchers of milk, in addition to the usual soda and candy fare. Even better, you can pre-order your intermission snacks - just print the form on the New Vic's website, fill out what you'd like, and hand it to any usher when you arrive at the theater - no line between acts! Members can attend Workshops through the theater's workshop lottery program. Buy tickets for a show with a workshop session, and the theater will notify you six weeks in advance if your family is chosen. Many shows are weekend only, but there are afternoon (noon, 1pm or 2pm) and evening performances (5pm, 6pm, or 7pm). The theater is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays. VicTeens, for ages 13 to 18, and Junior VicTeens, for ages 11 to 13, are special programs designed for older kids, offering classes, evenings out with peers, and more. |
