New York Premiere
Transplanting the Book of Job to modern day Louisiana, this New York premiere play stirs domestic drama, religious allegory and poetry into an intoxicating mix. Tony winner Phylicia Reed (A Raisin in the Sun, Creed) leads the cast as Shelah, a matriach whose deep faith is tested when herself and her family are beset by one tragedy after another.
Written by McArthur Genius Award recipient Talvin Alvin MCraney (The Brothers/Sisters Plays, Head of Passes was originally developed by Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, before playing Berkley Rep last year. This Public Theater staging is directed by Tina Lanau (Superior Donut) and also stars Francois Battiste, Kyle Beltran and J. Bernard Calloway.
What is Head of Passes About?
It's the distant present in a marshy area of Louisiana, and the tides are rising. In a decaying bed and Breakfast, Shelah's family gather to throw her a surprise birthday party, but their celebration is shortlived. Amongst the cramped, fevered confines of the house, an atmosphere of deep unease sets in, with the deeply religious Shelah convinced that some kind of heaven-sent suffering is on the way. And the tides rise ever higher.
