Alexei Ratmansky & Mark Ryden's surreal new balletBuy Tickets
A candy-coated ballet that dreams are made of, Whipped Cream is the latest work from famed choreographer, and Artist in Residence of American Ballet Theatre, Alexei Ratmansky. Based on the 1920's ballet Schlagobers, which boasts a libretto and music by Richard Strauss, Whipped Cream is the story of a boy who begins to hallucinate a surreal world of living candy after over-indulging in a Vienesse Pastry Shop. The show's set and costumes are designed by pop artist Mark Ryden, creating a ballet that looks like no other.
One of the art-form's true modern greats, Alexei Ratmansky has been American Ballet Theatre's Artist in Residence since 2008, following his directorship of the Bolshoi Ballet. During his tenure at the ATB, he has choreographed On the Dnieper, Seven Sonatas, and reconstructed Petipa's Sleeping Beauty. Known as one of the founding fathers of pop surrealism, Ryden unmistakable style blends kitschy ephemera, such as big-eyed baby dolls, religious imagery and Dali-esque melting landscapes.
