As part of the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, this venue dedicated to ballet and opera first opened in 1966, replacing the original Metropolitan Opera House that opened in 1883 on Broadway, but was too small for advancing technology and stagecraft. It has a total of 4,000 seats, making it the largest purpose-built opera house in the world.

The ever enduring Don Giovanni returns to the Metropolitan Opera. Mozart's libertine philanderer is cast in a decidedly darker light in this staging, whose story of unavenged justice incorporates tragedy and black comedy, as well as the supernatural elements which ultimately downfall. Giovanni is no misunderstood hero in this production, which was created by acclaimed British director and producer Michael Grandage.

Franco Zefferelli presents a magnificent cast starring Angela Gheorghiu as the frail Mimi, with Ramon Vargas taking on the role of her passionate lover, Rodolfo in his iconic production of this Puccini favorite. Innovative young conductor Nicola Luisotti oversees a glorious vocal ensemble that proves once again why this opera is the most performed at the Met.

Rossini's final masterpiece is this epic tale of oppression and power and how one man takes on the might of the 13th Century Austrian occupation at great cost, both physical and emotional as Gessel, the Austrian Governor places Tell's own son in the firing line. With a rousing score that evokes the rumbling of storms and joyous merriment, this triumphant opera is truly a thing to behold!

Metropolitan Opera: Jenufa

The Metropolitan Opera present Leos Janacek's 1904 seminal opera for the first time in nearly a decade this season. Familial honor is at stake, as a well-meaning woman takes terrible action to ensure her step-daughter's future in this emotionally overwrought psychological drama that pushes the performers and the audience. Starring Oksana Dya and Karita Mattia and conducted by David Robertson.
