Frequently Asked Questions

What are Met Titles?
Met Titles are a custom designed system for simultaneous translation that has been created by The Metropolitan Opera. They are used for all opera performances.

The Met Titles are seen on individual screens on the seat backs, on stanchions and at all Standing Room locations except the Grand Tier.

The screen is controlled by each viewer, so that any audience member who wishes not to have Met Titles can choose not to turn them on.

The screens are polarized, so that they are not easily visible from either side, to minimize intrusion on neighboring seats.

Displays in some boxes slide or pivot to facilitate seating and optimize viewing. Please consult with an usher for instructions on how to adjust these displays.

Prior to use and before each act begins, each unit will display the message “Met Titles: press to view.” To activate the titles, push the red button by the screen. The titles must be re-activated before each act. When activated, prior to the curtain going up, the screen will indicate which act is upcoming.

Please note that titles will appear at irregular intervals as needed, and there will be periods during performances where titles are not appropriate and the screen will be dark.

Should you require any assistance with your Met Titles screen, please consult with an usher.

Standing Room
Standing room tickets generally cost $20 for Orchestra and $15 for Family Circle. They go on sale at the Box Office on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am for Saturday through the following Friday performances. One ticket per person, per performance may be purchased for cash only. The line often starts much earlier than 10:00 am.

Standing room ticket prices may vary for special events. Please call Met Ticket Service at 212-362-6000 for details.

Student Discount Tickets
Student Discount Tickets for full time high school and university students, age 29 or under, are available for selected performances and may be purchased at The Met Box Office windows.

Prices are $25 for weekday performances and $35 for Friday and Saturday performances. A valid student ID and proof of age must be presented at time of purchase. Limit two tickets per performance.

Beginning September 1st, call Met Ticket Service at 212-362-6000 for current Student Discount Ticket availability.

Return/Refund Policy
All casts are subject to change. It is general policy at The Met that there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations. Subscribers do have certain exchange privileges. See Subscriptions.

Ticket Donations
If you are unable to use your tickets, you may donate them to The Metropolitan Opera for resale until curtain time by calling Met Ticket Service at 212-362-6000, or by mailing unripped tickets to:

Metropolitan Opera
P.O. Box 1704
New York, NY  10023

Ticket donations must be received prior to the performance. Once donated tickets are received by The Met, a tax receipt will be issued by mail four weeks after the performance date. If you choose to donate your ticket in person at the Box Office, a tax receipt will be issued at that time.

Cancellations
Ticket holders frequently donate their tickets if they are unable to attend a performance, and these tickets are the last possibility of obtaining seats for a performance that is sold out. Cancellations or tickets that are released for sale on the day of the performance go on sale at the Box Office two hours before each scheduled curtain.

Beepers & Cellular Phones
Patrons with cellular telephones, alarm watches and/or electronic paging systems must turn them off prior to entering the auditorium.

Cameras, Recording Devices & Lights
The photographing or sound recording of any performance, or the possession of any device for such photographing or sound recording inside the theater, without written permission of the management, is prohibited by law. Offenders may be ejected and liable for damages and other lawful remedies. Lights inside the auditorium are prohibited. Ticket holders using pen flashlights will be asked to discontinue the practice.

Latecomers
Latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium until intermission or on rare occasions when the Conductor has designated an appropriate interval for seating. Warning chimes are sounded pre-performance and during intermission at 8 minutes and 4 minutes prior to curtain. Audience members who leave the auditorium during a performance will not be readmitted until intermission or at an appropriate interval, if one has been designated by the Conductor. There are areas off the North and South sides of the Orchestra level and in List Hall where latecomers may watch the performance on color screens until an appropriate time of entry.

Dress Code
There is no dress code at The Met. People tend to dress more formally for Galas or openings of new productions, but this is optional. We recommend comfortable clothing appropriate for a professional setting.

Smoking
In compliance with New York City Department of Health Regulations, smoking is prohibited in all areas of this theater.

Food
Food and beverages are not permitted in the auditorium. Dining and intermission refreshments are available outside the auditorium.

Children
All attendees, including children, must be ticketed for the performance.
