Why See Gently Down the Stream?

PlaysOff Broadway ShowsCritics Picks

Starring Harvey Fierstein

From Martin Sherman, the writer of Bent and The Boy from Oz, comes this moving new play which traces a romance between two gay men from very different generations. Celebrating the triumphs of the gay rights movement, and paying tribute to those who sacrificed so much in the struggle for equality, Gently Down the Stream is a simple love story with extraordinary depth.

Leading the cast is two-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy, Hairspray), starring alongside Gabriel Ebert and Christopher Sears.

What is Gently Down the Stream About?

Gently Down the Stream is the story of Beau and Rufus, who meet in London and fall for each other. Yet their age difference is telling, with Beau reluctant to throw himself headlong into a relationship after years of dating in the face of discrimination and secrecy. Rufus on the other hand is free of Beau's shackles, a young and alive soul taking advantage of the internet dating age that is just beginning. Despite Beau's initial reticence, he realises that maybe times have really changed enough to commit himself fully, and without fear, to his new lover.
