The Village Bike is a dark comedy by Penelope Skinner about a pregnant woman who can't seem to entice her husband to be more amorous in the bedroom - he's too busy reading pregnancy books and preparing for their child's arrival. The purchase of a bicycle - intended to burn off some energy and calories - takes her a bit further than she'd anticipated.
With the Summer stretching ahead of her, newly pregnant school teacher Becky (Greta Gerwig) decides to buy a bicycle from Oliver, the village 'eccentric'. Desperate for someone to make her feel desirable, she embarks on an affair with him which she tries to keep emotionally unattached by acting out fantasies from her husbands collection of old porn videos.
The Village Bike is a refreshing take on sexuality, presented from a woman's perspective (a pregnant school teacher no less). The play premiered in London in 2011 where its run sold-out despite being extended twice. Greta Gerwig will make her Broadway debut in this New York City production.
