Based on the 2007 critically acclaimed movie
The Band's Visit is a brand-new musical by Drama Desk-nominated playwright Itamar Moses that explores a softer side to the Middle East conflict. When an Egyptian Police band are scheduled to play in Israel, confusion at the border crossing results in the band stranded in a remote village overnight. Taken in by the friendly locals, they find that their lives and beliefs aren't as different after all. Among the cast are Tony nominee Tony Shalhoub (Monk) and John Cariani (Something Rotten!).
With a new original score by three-time Tony nominee David Yazbeck whose credits include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Full Monty, the stage is set for a heartfelt and deep encounter between nationalities that is often fraught with suspicion and violence.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Based on the 2007 critically acclaimed movie by Eran Kolirin, this new musical adaptation sees two very different cultures mesh together throughout the course of one-night. A simple spelling mistake at the Egypt/Israel border sees the Alexandria Police Band redirected to the wrong town, where there is no public transport, nor hotels. Taken in by the charitable restaurant owner as they discuss their predicament, the band are invited to stay at his various relatives' homes overnight. Love is in the air for one member of the band, which culminates in an enchanting evening at the local ice-skating rink. The others realise that their lives are changed forever after this change in circumstance.
