An elegant coming of age story set on the shore of Lake Erie
A. R. Gurney continues his Residency One (a year long presentation of one playwright's works) at the Signature Theatre with What I Did Last Summer. Best known for Love Letters, Gurney is one of American theater's finest chroniclers of upper middle-class ennui and heartbreak. His previous play for the Signature was a re-staging of his 1977 multi-narrative comedy, The Wayside Motor Inn.
First premiered in 1981, this elegiac, coming of age story is set on the shores of Lake Erie in 1945. It revolves around the 14 year old Charlie, vacationing with his Waspish mother Grace, who feels a desperate need for artistic self-expression bubbling up inside him. This desire finds an outlet when he meet Bohemian art teacher Anna, but his sudden wellspring of creativity is met with disapproval by the conservative Grace.
