A Play with Pedigree
An all-star cast and creative team have assembled for Pulitzer winner Annie Baker's latest. The first work of the playwright's Signature Theatre residency, John is set in a Gettysburg Bed & Breakfast, and explores the dynamic between the establishment's cheerful owner and two of its guests, a troubled young couple struggling to stay together.
Named by the New York Times as "one of the freshest and most talented dramatists to emerge Off Broadway in the past decade", Annie Baker won her Pulitzer for 2013's The Flick, an expertly understated comedic portrait of three philosophising cinema ushers.
Who's Who
Starring in John is Christopher Abbott. Best known for his role as Charlie on HBO's Girls, he made his Broadway debut four years ago in The House of Blue Leaves, acting alongside Edie Falco. Joining him in the cast are Tony nominee Lois Smith (Buried Child), Emmy nominee Georgia Engel (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Hong Chau (Treme).
Director of the moment Sam Gold helms this production. He won a Tony this year for his work on the magnificent Fun Home, and also collaborated with Baker on The Flick, directing both the original run and recent revival at the Barrow Street Theatre.
