When Ian McKellen and Trevor Nunn first worked together more than a quarter century ago at the Royal Shakespeare Company, they vowed that one day they would collaborate on King Lear. This year they are doing just that, and more, pairing the tragic tale of Lear with Chekhov's masterful account of unrequited love and ambition, The Seagull.

Presented by a single RSC ensemble company, the plays reveal lives in crisis, facing both regret and loss. McKellen, in the title role of Lear and making special appearances as Sorin in the The Seagull on September 12, 20, and 27, is an astonishingly versatile actor whose career spans performances at BAM (King Lear, in the role of Edgar, 1974; Richard III, 1992), on Broadway (Amadeus; Dance of Death), in film (Gods and Monsters; The Lord of the Rings; X-Men), and in television (Tales of the City; The Simpsons).

Nunn's resume includes landmark productions of Shakespeare and other classical work as well as the legendary Broadway runs of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Cats, Les Misérables, and Sunset Boulevard. Presented together, the plays have a compelling synergy and give BAM audiences the rare opportunity to see these two long-standing colleagues at work.
