Dodin has created a miracle. Maly Drama's company bubbles with the life, the thoughts, the art of Chekhov's universe.
Novaya Gazeta (Russia)
The legendary Maly Drama Theatre began against all odds in war-ravaged Leningrad in 1944, performing in relative obscurity until the mid-70s, when current artistic director Dodin and other well-known artists joined the company. Maly Drama grew, in breadth and ambition, to become an internationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning theater famous for challenging theatrical boundaries with Dodin's thrillingly imaginative productions and accomplished ensemble of actors.
Last at BAM with the revelatory sold-out production of Uncle Vanya (2010 Spring Season), Maly Drama Theatre returns with Three Sisters, Chekhov's great, tragicomic story of women contending with disillusioned life in a small Russian town. Lev Dodin directs this luminous, complex play with rich insight into Chekhov's eloquent understanding of resignation, longing, and love.
Opening night: 18 April 2012
Closing night: 28 April 2012
