Sophocles' desolate tale of determination over duty gets a new colloquial translation by Canadian Poet Anne Carson in this new production starring Academy Award winning actress Juliette Binoche as the titular tragic heroine and directed by Olivier recipient Ivo Van Hove. After a successful debut in Europe, this taut and moving work will hold its U.S premiere this Fall at the historic Brooklyn Academy of Music.
When Antigone's brother Polynices is labeled as a traitor and dies in battle, King Kreon of Thebes dictates that his body is lain outside the city gates and left as carrion for nature, not sanctified by holy rites. Desolate and grieving, Antigone defies his edict in order to give her brother a proper burial, but is torn by the obligation as a citizen and the ties of blood and family.
Van Hove presents us with Antigone's decision in this mournful and stark production, with vast monochrome videoscapes providing a backdrop for the unfolding philosophical and physical tragedy that changes her life forever.
