Duke Theater History

Built and operated by The New 42nd Street and named in recognition of a generous grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Duke on 42nd Street is a flexible, 199-seat, black-box theater available for rental to local, national and international performing arts companies. 

Since its opening in June 2000, the Theater has become home to a broad spectrum of work including: The 92nd Street Y's Harkness Dance Project, Dance Theater Workshop, 

The International Hispanic Theatre Festival, Marc Salem's Mindgames, Too!, New Professional Theatre and Playwrights Horizons, The NYC Tap Festival. 

The Duke on 42nd Street was built as part of the state-of-the-art New 42nd Street Studios and is located on the building's second floor at 229 West 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues.
