Introducing the new Musical Director Designate

Join the New York Philharmonic once again for its opening concert for the 2017/18, as Dutch-born conductor and violin virtuoso Jaap van Zweden takes up the maestro baton, taking over from Alan Gilbert as the new Musical Director Designate. Jaap has prolific experience conduction, having previously been music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, as well as continuing in his role as music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

The focus of the evening is Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler, which notably shares various similarities with Beethoven's Fifth. Covering a huge scope in sound and imagination; it was inspired by his close brush with death, and finding the love of his life, Alma Schindler.
