Led by Sir Antonio Pappano
An enchanting double program that includes a New York premiere piece by Salvatore Sciarrino (La nuova Euridice secondo Rilke) will be conducted by eminent British maestro and music director of the Royal Opera House, Sir Antonio Pappano, featuring guest soprano Barbara Hannigan. With the visiting Rome-based orchestra, also directed by Sir Anthony, the Orchestra has been heading into the international limelight with recordings through EMI. The second part of the evening will feature Mahler's powerful Symphony No. 6.
Mahler's Sixth was originally a dramatic piece in three parts that encompassed the major tragedies in his life; he removed the third hammer blow due to superstition around his own frail health. However it is also a work of joy, whcih celebrates his beloved mountain pastures (complete with cowbells!) and of course an ode to his beloved wife Alma.
