Since its founding by Eve Adamson in 1971, Jean Cocteau Repertory has concentrated on the production of classic theatre by a resident company of actors. Attracted by timeless works of the past and present, the company seeks to create what the great playwright and director Cocteau called a “poetry of the theatre" where all elements of live performance fuse into a total, cohesive experience.

In 1974 the company moved from its original storefront on Bond Street into the landmark Bouwerie Lane Theatre. Today, under the creative leadership of David Fuller, the Cocteau’s commitment to its original goals remains intact. The Cocteau annually presents five to seven productions, year-round, usually with two plays running in rotating repertory.

Jean Cocteau Repertory has produced the masterworks of world dramatic literature, old and new, since 1971. In its 34th year of rotating repertory, nurturing a permanent resident acting company and reaching out to a diverse audience, the Cocteau stands out as one of the longest-running classic theatres in the nation.

Eve Adamson, one of the pioneers of the off-off-Broadway movement, founded Cocteau Rep in a storefront on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The theatre found a receptive audience, and in 1974 moved into the historic landmark Bouwerie Lane Theatre in the Noho area. Since then, the Cocteau and its audience have grown steadily. Under the creative leadership of David Fuller, the theatre's resident acting company now presents over 200 performances in each ten-month season to approximately 25,000 patrons
