Bringing the expertise and bravery of a veteran spelunker, Rebecca Hall finds a compelling persuasiveness and the sense that madness may be the sanest response to a mad world. Theatergoers have the precious chance to observe her making darkness visible i

Clare Lizzimore's newest work

Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Hall takes the lead in this New York premiere of Clare Lizzimore's disturbing psychological comedy-noir, which first appeared on stage last year in Washington DC. Following the mental struggles of young housewife Rachel, she is convinced that something lurks within the walls of her new home. Isolated, lonely and desperate to regain a life long-since diminished due to social anxiety, Rachel must navigate through a set of disturbing visions with the help of her loving husband Tom, her patient therapist, and a third man who she is strangely attracted to.

But is the mysterious romantic burglar real, or a figment of her overactive imagination? And will she ever accept the assistance of those trying to help her, or will she continue sinking within her own mind?

Exploring mental health in women

First seen at the 2015 Women's Voices Theater Festival, Animal garnered positive critical reviews for its unflinching look at domestic isolation and mental health. Rachel's struggle to confront yet simultaneously avoid reality is a global phenomenon experienced by millions of non-working women. Lizzimore, a British Olivier Award-nominated director and playwright is currently working with London's Royal Court and Almeida Theatres as a guest artist. Animal is her first New York play.

Gaye Taylor Upchurch returns to helm this simply-designed production, notable for its used of dark performance space and minimal props, creating an intense and at time suffocating atmosphere.
