World Premiere
Music, religion and tempestuous family dynamics collide in the fiery The Total Bent, which makes its world premiere at the Public this May. Written by Tony winner Stew (Passing Strange), this atypical musical tells the story of black gospel singer Marty, who tries to break away from the influence of his domineering record producer father. First presented back in 2012 a part of The Public's experimental PublicLabs series, the show's winning score is a propulsive mix of gospel and rock 'n' roll.
Ato Blankson-Wood leads the cast as Marty, while Vondie Curtis-Hall (Daredevil, Chicago Hope) plays his father. The show is directed by Joanna Settle (Nine Parts of Desire)
What is The Total Bent About?
Gospel singer Marty is one of his record producing father's most successful acts, yet he's no longer content with trotting out the same safe material. America is in the midst of huge social upheaval, and Marty feels the need to channel his turbulent feelings into a new genre of music - rock 'n' roll! His father is aghast at the idea that his own son (and biggest name) should turn his back on the music of the church.
The arrival of a British record producer who also sees Marty's potential throws the generational divide into an even sharper contrast, and sets father and son on a collision course.
