Why See Southern Comfort?

MusicalsOff Broadway ShowsCritics Picks

A Transformative Musical

Following the success of Hamilton and Fun Home, The Public Theater looks set to take the musical in yet another wholly original direction with Southern Comfort. Based on the 2001 documentary of the same name, this bluegrass-infused show centers on a group of transgender people living in rural Georgia. Marginalized by the wider community, they must find solace and understanding in one another, and stake their claim to live as they choose.

Southern Comfort comes at a time of unprecedented interest and portrayals of the transgender community in the arts, from Amazon's Transparent and Laverne Cox's role on Orange is the New Black, to the headline-dominating Caitlyn Jenner.

Off-Broadway 2016

Following a handful of New York workshops, Southern Comfort premiered in Pittsfield, MA, in 2013 to glowing reviews - Broadway World declared it the "most original and unusual story ever told in the musical format". That production's director and co-creator Thomas Caruso returns to helms this Off-Broadway staging.

WHAT IS SOUTHERN COMFORT ABOUT?

Three transgender couples living in rural Georgia live out their lives isolated from the wider community, fearful of the repercussions should their identities become public knowledge. One Sunday every month they gather together to talk through their issues and reaffirm their right to live their lives as they choose. We follow them as they wrestle with their relationships, identities and the families who have rejected them.
