Old Times

Closed November 29, 2015

Ms. Reilly finds a little-girl petulance in Kate's seeming passivity, while Ms. Best's Anna is worldly to the point of vampishness. Mr. Owen underscores Deeley's beleaguered air of machismo with a self-parodying, lounge lizard swagger.

Why See Old Times?

First ever Broadway revival for pinter's three-hander

Oscar nominee Clive Owen (Closer) will tread the Broadway stage for the first time in Roundabout Theatre's revival of Harold Pinter's Old Times. The British actor, who is currently starring in Cinemax's The Knick, has a long list of London theatre credits to his name, including Romeo and Juliet and A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.

Concerning the power battle which develops between a husband and his wife's old roomate, Old Times was last staged on Broadway in 1971, a production which starred Robert Shaw, Rosemary Harris and Mary Ure. This revival is directed by Tony winner Douglas Hodge (La Cage aux Follies), who has an intimate knowledge of Pinter's oeuvre, having made his name throughout the 1990s starring in adaptations of the playwright's work. In another Broadway first, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke provides the play's original music. Hodge has called his score "epic, heartbreaking, irresistible and complex."

What is Old Times About?

Married couple Kate and Deeley have invited Anna, an old friend from Kate's past, over for dinner. Deeley has never meant their guest before and so is taken aback when Anna starts to regale them with intimate stories from Kate's past. Not to be outdone, Deeley shares his own anecdotes about his wife, and the evening turns into an increasingly embittered game of one one-upmanship, as the pair both try and prove that they are the one who really knows Kate the best.
