Journey of a rock star Rabbi
When he was a young boy in the 1930's, Shlomo Carlebach saw the Nazi regime murder a Jewish man for simply singing in the streets of Austria. Pledging for ever more to stand up for freedom of musical expression, this event came to shape the life of Carlebach leading him away from the war to the folk movement that blossomed forth from Greenwich Village and Haight-Ashbury. As a singer-songwriter, the inspiring life of the 'Singing Rabbi' became to symbolise hope and kindness as he found a way to heal through music.
With music and lyrics by Shlomo Carlebach and David Schechter, and book and direction by Daniel Wise, Soul Doctor follows Shlomo from Europe to the Upper West Side, where he studied the Torah and became a Rabbi, before breaking with Orthadox tradition and picking up a guitar. Through his live shows in and around Greenwich, he met Soul legend Nina Simone and was a peer of Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, who showed this unlikely troubadour the heart of the new generation and lead his meteoric rise to stardom.
Back again Off-Broadway, this is a wonderful story of perseverance and heart, that will uplift all audiences!
