Tackling police brutality via the stage
With the Black Lives Matter movement and reports of police brutality coming out on a horrifyingly regular basis, this startingly topical play by Anthony P. Pennino premieres off-Broadway this September, having been updated using recent stories as reported in the news. Chokehold won the Outstanding Production of a New Play prize at the 2015 Planet Connections festival, and is directed by Tim Cusack.
Chokehold follows the story of five black friends, who sick and tired of peacefully protesting to no avail, plan on a serious act of violence against an innocent to shake up the country's antipathy towards racism, and find themselves caught up in a nightmare as they find that carrying out their plans is an entirely different kettle of fish completely. Treading a thin line between what is right, and what is necessary, the play examines the individual journeys of those affected by police brutality and societal distrust, as well as how this affects people on a larger scale.
