The 1921 show was a huge surprise hit in its day, kickstarting the careers of Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson, and rewriting Broadway's racial rulebook. Adapted from Alice Walker's Pultizer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple returns to Broadway in 2015 with Tony winner Heather Headley, Orange Is The New Black's Danielle Brooks and British actress Cynthia Erivo topping the bill. Centering on a young black girl named Celie in early 1900s America, The Color Purple is an uplifting tale of triumph over adversity, and boasts Oprah as one of its producers. More info
